Removing common stains: a quick guide by type

The key to any stain is one thing: act fast and do not scrub aggressively, so you do not spread it or push it deeper into the fiber.

The golden rule: blot, don't rub

Absorb the liquid with a paper towel, from the edges toward the center. Rubbing spreads the stain and damages the fabric.

By type

• Coffee / tea — cold water and a little detergent; for old marks, diluted vinegar.
• Red wine — sprinkle salt immediately, then water with vinegar. Never hot water.
• Grease / oil — sprinkle baking soda or starch to absorb, then a degreaser.
• Blood — cold water only; warm water sets the stain permanently.
• Ink — dab with isopropyl alcohol on a clean cloth.
• Grass — a solution of water with detergent and a little vinegar.

Test first

On colored or delicate textiles, test the solution on a hidden area first. Better 30 seconds of caution than a permanently bleached spot.

When not to push it

Delicate upholstery, valuable rugs and clothes labeled "dry clean only" call for a specialist. Insisting at home can do more harm.
