Caring for wood floors and hard surfaces without ruining them

The most common mistake when cleaning floors is treating them all the same. Each material has its own needs.
Hardwood
Wood and water do not get along. Use a well-wrung mop, never soaking wet, and a neutral product made for wood. Avoid vinegar — over time it dulls the finish.
Laminate
Durable, but sensitive to water at the joints. Same rules: minimal moisture and a quick wipe of any spills.
Tile and ceramic
The most forgiving. Here you can use plenty of water and stronger solutions. Watch the grout — it stains and needs a brush now and then.
Natural stone (marble, travertine)
Sensitive to acids. Never vinegar or citric acid — they stain irreversibly. Only pH-neutral products made for stone.
Rules that apply everywhere
- Vacuum or sweep before mopping — grit scratches
- A doormat at the entrance cuts 80% of the dirt
- Dry high-traffic areas to avoid streaks
